Arranging Visas and Permits to Tibet

Whether you are planning a longer trek through the mountainous lands of Tibet or are simply looking to explore Lhasa you will need to arrange your visa and permits beforehand. Although arriving to Tibet is much easier these days, you may find that some preparation is needed to ensure a smooth and stress free travel. What permits or visas do I need?

There are some steps to consider:

Firstly, you need a valid Chinese visa (citizens of Brunei, Japan and Singapore are exempt). Remember your passport must be valid at least 6 months! All travelers fill in a customs and health declaration form on arrival in the country.

Foreigners also need a Tibet Travel Permit (also known as Tibet Visa) to be able to board a train or plane to Lhasa. For this, you need to pre-arrange an itinerary through a legal travel agency before arriving in Tibet.
